PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight device capable of extending its service life, and its control method. SOLUTION: The backlight device includes a control unit, a backlight driving unit, a first light source module and a second light source module. The backlight driving unit is controlled by the control unit and gives a driving command to light on/off the light source modules. The first and second light source modules are thereby lighted on or off based on a predetermined value of a time interval, the frequency of power on operations, or the like, or the second light source module may be used to compensate a brightness shortage when brightness is insufficient, to maintain the total brightness within a predetermined range.
