PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clearly exhibit liquid crystallinity even in a small amount of a liquid crystal molecule. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal elastomer having an oligomer liquid crystal subjected to microphase separation in an elastomer is obtained by crosslinking an oligomer liquid crystal molecule and a polybutadiene (cis-isomer) having a molecular weight of 2,000,000-3,000,000 at a relatively low temperature of 170°C-220°C and is made to have the same rubber elasticity, liquid crystallinity and swelling properties as those of a conventional liquid crystal elastomer. Consequently, the liquid crystal elastomer is usable as artificial muscle, an actuator, a display element and a photoprotective film that a conventional liquid crystal elastomer aims at.
