PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication system which is of a centralized type and capable of judging whether every reliance can be placed or not resting on the basis of an authentication relation between apparatuses to authenticate. SOLUTION: An authentication server 10 performs a mutual authentication between apparatuses A20 and B30 responding to a request made by the apparatus A20 for authentication of the apparatus B30. The reliability information table 17 possessed by the authentication server 10 stores the propriety of reliance placed on the apparatuses from the other apparatuses. The reliability confirmation processing unit 15 of the authentication server 10 acquires the propriety of reliance placed on the apparatus B30 from the apparatus A20 and the propriety of reliance placed on the apparatus A20 from the apparatus B30 referring to the reliability information table 17, and when both the two acquired results show that they are mutually reliable, the apparatuses A20 and B30 are capable of placing every reliance on each other.
