The method involves pre-processing a surface e.g. bearing recess, and smoothing the surface by a partial deformation by using a spherical abrading tool (4). The tool is pressed against the surface and moved along the surface for smoothing the surface. The tool is pressed with a pre-determined contact pressure or a pre-determined pre-tensioning force against the surface. A circular groove with a depth lying in the micrometer range is designed in the surface. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an abrading tool with a spherical abrading body (2) a workpiece with a bearing recess.
