[PROBLEMS] To provide a technique for selecting a tape recording device having an optimal performance for data to be stored and improving performance of backup of data in a plurality of tape recording devices. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] A selection device includes: a history information storage unit for storing history information on a data length of past data stored in one of the tape recording devices; a rank decision unit for deciding the rank of the data length for the data to be stored, according to the history information on the data length of the past data read out from the history information storage unit; a rank table storage unit for storing a performance rank table of the tape recording devices; a selection unit for selecting a tape recording device for storing the data to be stored, according to the performance rank table read out from the rank table storage unit and the rank of the data length decided by the rank decision unit so that data storage in the tape recording devices is performed effectively as a whole; and a transfer unit for transferring the data to be stored, to the tape recording device selected by the selection unit.
