PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which is excellent in running durability and electromagnetic conversion characteristics, especially, is improved in an error rate dominantly, and can be made into a high density and a high output. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium, an undercoat layer and a magnetic layer are provided on one side of a support, a back layer is provided on the other side, and the following characteristics (1) to (5) are all shared: (1) thickness of the magnetic layer is 0.30μm or less; (2) a center line average surface roughness Ra of the magnetic layer is 3.2 nm or less; (3) a powder body size of a ferromagnetic powder is 80 nm or less; (4) a center line average surface roughness Ra of the undercoat layer is 2.5 nm or less; and (5) when a central value of a rugged part of the layer is P<SB>0</SB>, a maximum convex amount of the undercoat layer is P<SB>1</SB>, and the convex amounts of a second layer, third, fourth, fifth, to nineteenth and twentieth layers are P<SB>2</SB>, P<SB>3</SB>, P<SB>4</SB>, P<SB>5</SB>, ..., P<SB>19</SB>, and P<SB>20</SB>, (P<SB>1</SB>-P<SB>0</SB>) is 15 nm or less and (P<SB>1</SB>-P<SB>20</SB>) is 3 nm or less.
