<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently detect a face while preventing the deterioration of face detecting performance due to the brightness or the kind of illumination during photographing. <P>SOLUTION: An image P is acquired by an image pickup means 2, and whether or not illumination is a tungsten light source is decided by an illumination deciding means 4. Then, when it is decided that the illumination is the tungsten light source, the detection of the face is performed based on an R signal image PR.
