PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of achieving energy saving, since a rush current at the time when a power supply is applied is suppressed with a simple circuit structure, and also a filament pre-heating current can be interrupted while it is lighted. SOLUTION: A rush current preventing resistance 3 is connected in series to a filament pre-heating transformer 4 on the path of the rush current, and a switching means 5 and a control circuit 6 to control switching on and off of the switching means 5 are provided in parallel in the series circuit of the filament pre-heating transformer 4 and the rush current preventing resistance 3. When a power supply is applied, the switching means 5 is turned off, and a current is supplied to the filament pre-heating transformer 4 to pre-heat the filaments 17a, 17b, and the rush current is suppressed by the rush current preventing resistance 3. After pre-heating is completed, the switching means 5 is turned on so as not to supply a current to the rush current preventing resistance 3 and the filament pre-heating transformer 4.
