PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide friction stir welding equipment that can quickly soften a weld zone by efficiently heating it without greatly increasing cost and that makes long distance joining possible as well as increasing a welding speed by reducing damage to a rotary tool even if a workpiece is a high melting point material such as steel. SOLUTION: In the friction stir welding equipment 1, even if a workpiece W is composed of a high melting point material, an electric current is made to flow to the rotary tool 2 and the workpiece W using a power source 3, thereby generating resistance heat in the rotary tool 2 and the weld zone WB of the workpiece W, the temperature of the weld zone WB can be quickly increased to a softening point, along with a frictional heat by the high speed revolution of the rotary tool, and creating a plastic flow state.
