PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the pressurized contact/distancing state of a transfer member inexpensively without using a photointerrupter. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a secondary transfer roller 28 which is brought into pressurized contact with an intermediate transfer belt 23 to make the intermediate transfer belt 23 perform transfer and can move between a pressurized contact state and a distancing state with respect to the intermediate transfer belt, a contacting/distancing driving device SK which drives the secondary transfer roller 28 to move between the pressurized contact state and the distancing state, and an optical detecting means 33 which is provided to detect the state of a toner image on the intermediate transfer belt 23 in the form of variation in quantity of light transmitting the intermediate transfer belt. The image forming apparatus is configured to detect variation in the toner image on the intermediate transfer belt 23 due to the pressurized contact of the secondary transfer roller 28 against the intermediate transfer belt 23 by the detecting means 33 and then based upon variation in the detection signal S1, detects the pressurized contact state and the distancing state of the secondary transfer roller 28.
