A method for limiting the use of a potable terminal is provided to classify users into main users and sub-users, limit a service available menu and a service limited menu, and perform mode conversion between a main user mode and a sub-user mode by using a user mode conversion key. A user mode item is selected in a potable terminal(101). A user authentication is performed(103). When the user inputs a password, it is checked whether the inputted password is identical to a pre-set password of the potable terminal(107). When the inputted password is identical to the pre-set password, it is checked whether a user mode is set(109). When the user mode is set, a user mode is selected among a main user and a sub-user(111). It is checked whether the selected user mode is the main user(113). When the main user is selected, a certain item of service available items of the main user is set(115) and a certain item of service limited items is set(117). The set content of the service available item and the service limited item of the main user is stored(119). The set service available menu of the main user and that the current user mode is the main user mode are displayed(121).
