PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which can achieve the smoothing of a magnetic layer appropriate to high density recording and has high electromagnetic conversion characteristic. SOLUTION: One surface of a non-magnetic support has a non-magnetic layer including non-magnetic powders and bonding agent and a magnetic layer including ferromagnetic powders and bonding agent in this order, while another surface of the non-magnetic support is provided with a back coat layer. The ferromagnetic powders are ferromagnetic hexagonal ferrite powders whose average plate diameter is less than 30 nm, a center face surface roughness of the magnetic layer Ra ranges from 1.0 to 2.5 nm, Ra of the back coat layer ranges from 2.0 to 4.0 nm, a glass transition point Tg in an undercoat layer including the magnetic layer and non-magnetic layer ranges 75 to 100°C, and a ratio (R=Ym/Yb) between a Young'a modulus (Yb) of the magnetic layer and Young'a modulus (Yb) of the back coat layer ranges from 0.8 to 1.20.
