发明名称 Improvements relating to fluid operated shift registers
摘要
1,021,288. Fluid shift registers. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 4, 1964 [Dec. 19, 1963], No. 49362/64. Heading G4B. [Also in Division G3] A fluid-operated shift register is comprised of a series of bi-stable fluid switches, there being one switch for each stage of the register. Three stages 40, 42, 44 are shown. Each stage consists of a bi-stable amplifier 13, Fig. 1, (not shown) in which fluid from an inlet port 14 will flow either into an outlet 17 or an outlet 18. Control pulses form nozzles 19, 20 deflect the flow into outlets 18, 17 respectively if it is not already flowing into the appropriate outlet. These are denoted as " 1," " 0," respectively in the present example. Fig. 2 shows a shift register in which the stages 42 et seq. are provided with AND gates 47, 49, 50 and OR gates 45, 48. In operation a reset pulse is applied along a duct 62 which operates to set each stage to "0" A set pulse is then passed from a pump 67 through a hole 70 in a revolving disc 69 and along a duct 66 to the AND gates 29, 49, 55. If a pulse is applied to any of these gates by the ducts marked BIT A, BIT B or BIT C, the corresponding stage is switched to " 1." Timing pulses are then applied through further holes 76a, 76b, 76c of the disc 69 to a duct 77. The effect of each of these pulses is to move the information one stage to the right. Because of fluid stream inertia in the channels and as the same timing pulse is used by all stages the output from one stage is available to switch the following stage, if necessary, even though the first output disappears when the timing pulse is applied. If desired information bits may be supplied serially to the first stage only instead of in parallel as described above. They are then applied between the timing pulses. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the register may have further interconnections making it possible to transfer information to the right or to the left at will. The timing pulses must end before the power streams issue from new channels. To make the duration of the timing pulses less critical, the downstream ends of the " 0 " and " 1 " output channels may be formed as enlarged chambers which thus provide a delay until pressure builds up in the duct.
