<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pickup and an optical disk drive compatible with reading a single layer disk and writing on a dual-layer disk without removing the inserted filter. <P>SOLUTION: This pickup has a light source 1 emitting short wavelength light, an objective lens 6 to focus the light of the light source 1 on the optical disk 7 having one or two recording layers, and a filter 2 to regulate transmission of the light in the light path from the light source 1 to the optical disk 7.
