PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline battery superior in leakage resistance and discharge performance, suppressing generation of gas in a negative electrode without impairing performance of the negative electrode. SOLUTION: The alkaline battery is provided with a positive electrode containing at least manganese dioxide powder and nickel oxy-hydroxide powder, a negative electrode containing zinc alloy powder and a non-ionic surfactant, a separator arranged between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, and an alkaline electrolyte. The HLB value x of the surfactant, the average carbon number y of a hydrophobic group of the surfactant, and the content z (parts by weight) per zinc alloy powder 100 pts.wt. of the surfactant satisfy an inequality: 1.8≤y/x≤7.5 and satisfy an inequality: 1.2≤z/(y/x)<SP>3.3</SP>≤4.7.
