PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a duplicate preparation method in a disk array device for solving the physical trouble of capacity efficiency and a master volume without affecting a master volume regardless of the number of generations. SOLUTION: A duplicate volume preparation device 10 is provided with: an input/output processing means 100; a duplicate volume preparation means 101; and a real use area information storage table 120. The input/output processing means is provided with a function of, when an area as the object of input/output processing is a non-use area, updating information corresponding to the area of the real use area information storage table so as to show that it is a real use area. A duplicate preparation means is provided with a function of referring to the real use area information storage table to prepare a duplicate volume by writing only the data stored in the real use area in a duplicate data storage part 111 and a function of preparing the duplicate 121 of the real use area information storage table when a duplicate instruction has been made.
