PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a see-through type image display device that makes it easier, more speedy, and more accurate to specify and select a displayed real image and virtual image. SOLUTION: The image display device makes an observer view the real image by external light and the virtual image by image light at the same time by projecting the image light based upon image information on the retina of the observer while transmitting the external light, and the image display device includes an indication rod 12 whose position and direction can be changed, an indicator detection part 14 which detects the position and direction of the indication rod 12, and an image display part 18 which generates image information such that an auxiliary virtual image corresponding to the position and direction of the indication rod 12 is arranged on a coordinate system for display together with the main virtual image to be displayed, and projects the image light based upon the image information on the retina of the observer.
