The present invention relates to surface-modified nanoparticulate metal oxides where the metal is chosen from the group consisting of aluminum, cerium, iron, titanium, zinc and zirconium, wherein the surface modification comprises a coating with a copolymer P of A) 60 to 99 mol % of an N-vinyllactam and B) 1 to 40 mol % of a monomer chosen from the group of b<SUB>1</SUB>) C<SUB>8</SUB>-C<SUB>30</SUB>-alkyl esters of monoethylenically unsaturated C<SUB>3</SUB>-C<SUB>8</SUB>-carboxylic acids b<SUB>2</SUB>) N-alkyl- or N,N-dialkyl-substituted amides of acrylic acid or of methacrylic acid with C<SUB>8</SUB>-C<SUB>8</SUB>-alkyl radicals, or b<SUB>3</SUB>) vinyl esters of aliphatic C<SUB>8</SUB>-C<SUB>30</SUB>-carboxylic acids, or mixtures of these monomers. |
