A PDP with high image quality and long life can be realized by reducing hydrocarbons present in the space within the PDP. By arranging a catalyst reactive with hydrocarbons on a protective layer (8) of a front plate (1), a partition wall (12) of a back plate (2), a phosphor layer (13) or a dielectric foundation layer (11) so that the catalyst is exposed to the space within the PDP, the hydrocarbons are oxidized or decomposed by the catalytic action of the catalyst.
