[Also in Division H1] A hydrogen gas storage tank 7 (Fig. 1, not shown) charged with solid adsorbant, e.g. charcoal or silica gel, is filled by feeding the hydrogen through a duct 4 cooled by a heat exchanger 5 located in the vapour space of a metal tank 2 which is thermally insulated by a vacuum space 9 from the tank 7 and contains liquefied gas, e.g. liquid oxygen or air admitted through a duct 1 of the exchanger 5; the so-cooled feed hydrogen serving to cool the adsorbent to a temperature at which it more readily retains the hydrogen. Desorption of hydrogen and discharge through an outlet 12 leading to a fuel cell (not shown) is effected by passing direct current from the fuel cell through heating elements 11 and current passed through heater 10 serves to vaporize oxygen which is also fed to the cell through a duct 3. Alternatively heat may be supplied by circulating a liquid such as anhydrous alcohol or pentane in a closed cycle. The storage temperature of the hydrogen may be reduced by maintaining the liquid oxygen tank under vacuum and since hydrogen is absorbed more readily at lower temperatures the size of the apparatus may be reduced whilst retaining the storage capacity. |
