In a continuously-variable planetary friction gear comprising a pair of oppositely rotatable discs 4, 5 carrying races 6, 7 engaged by tiltable hemispherical friction rollers 13, the latter are carried by a hub member 19 secured to the output shaft 20 and provided with radial springs 22 for loading the rollers. As shown, the races 6, 7 are driven by bevel pinion 10 on the input shaft 11 and the rollers 13 are carried by ballended rods 16 in guide tubes 36 secured to the hub 19. The rollers are tiltable about the ends of rods 16 to vary the ratio by pivoted yokes 23 connected to a spider 26 on a threaded axial rod 27 adjustable by a hand wheel 31. In a second form, Fig. 4 (not shown), the input and output shafts are in line and the spider is adjusted by an axial rod controlled by a nut or hand lever, and the inner ends of the roller-loading spring carriers are pointed and slip from complementary recesses in the output shaft hub in the event of overloading. |
