A method of enhancing the yield of alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid obtained by liquid-phase oxidation of an olefin or alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehyde. In particular, there is provided a process for producing an alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid, characterized by including the step of carrying out an oxidation of olefin or alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehyde in a liquid phase to thereby obtain a reaction mixture containing an alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid and alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic anhydride and the step of bringing the alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic anhydride into contact with an alcohol or water to thereby obtain an alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid resulting from decomposition of the alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic anhydride. |
