A method for reproducing a compressed and encoded image data stream and an apparatus therefor are provided to reproduce a picture corresponding to a specific input time when a user wants to output the image data stream and output a P-picture frame or a B-picture frame as well as an I-picture frame. An input unit(810) allows a user to input the time when the user wants to reproduce an image data stream. A control unit(820) judges a type of a picture frame corresponding to the input time. An extracting unit(830) extracts a reference frame necessary for decoding the picture frame corresponding to the input time according to the judged type of the picture frame. An output unit(840) decodes and outputs the picture frame corresponding to the input time by using the extracted reference frame.
