The method involves testing a spark ignition engine or an equivalent engine for establishing a rattling signature line of the engine materializing on a support. A wall temperature of an engine block and an exhaust gas temperature of the engine are detected in parallel with fuel consumption of the engine in real time to obtain a point, where the point corresponds to a value of the measured fuel consumption and to a measured temperature difference between a wall and gas temperatures. A position of the point is compared with respect to the line for verifying if the point is below the line. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting a disturbed operation phase of a spark ignition engine.
