In a dual brake pedal actuating mechanism whereby simultaneous actuation of both pedal levers 10, 11 is effected through a foot-receiving pad or pressure member 14 pivotally mounted at 16 on one pedal lever 11 and adapted to bear on the second pedal lever 10 by means of a lug 17, when the pressure member 14 bears on the second pedal lever independent movement of the pedal levers for compensation is permitted. When the brakes are to be applied independently the pressure member 14 is swung round in a clockwise direction about its pivot 16 and lies against the pedal lever 11 below the pad 13 where it is retained by spring means (not shown). For simultaneous application of the brakes the pressure member 14 is swung upwardly to its operative position shown in which the lug 17 bears on the pad 12. Foot pressure applied to the pressure member is then transmitted to both pedal levers, but as the pressure member is free to move angularly about its pivot on the pad 13 and to rock about its point of engagement with the pad 12, differential movement of the pedals is permitted and the brakes will be applied with equal force even though this may require a greater movement of one pedal than the other. The point of engagement of the lug 17 with the pad 12 of pedal lever 10 may be adjusted so that when the brakes are applied through the pressure member the pressure applied to one pedal will be greater than that applied to the other by an amount sufficient to compensate for the different frictional losses in the transmissions to the brakes on opposite sides of the vehicle and to ensure substantially equal braking. Alternative embodiments are disclosed in the Specification including one example where the pedal lever 11 is not provided with a pad 13 but has directly pivoted thereto a pressure member 14 which acts in one position as a separate pad for independent actuation of the pedal levers 10, 11 and another position for simultaneous application of the pedals. The dual pedal actuating mechanism can also be employed for actuating the brakes on the front and rear wheels of vehicles such as to allow the distribution of the loading effect between the front and the rear wheels to be varied by a ratchet and pawl device at the pivot end of the movable pad or pressure member or on the pad or pressure member under the driver's foot so that the driver can adjust the position of the line of transmission of the applied thrust to the two pedals and apply a greater effort through one pedal than through the other. |
