Non - dusting, non - hygroscopic, non - toxic colouring compositions for pigmenting polymeric resins comprise a colour lake of an organic generally water-soluble, dyestuff and a lipophilic long-chain (preferably C12-C22) monocarboxylic fatty acid partial ester of a hexitol anhydride. The ester, constituting 0.02-2% by weight of the colour composition, is preferably liquid, e.g. sorbitan monolaurate, monooleate or trioleate, mannitan oleate, or mixed esters of sorbitan or mannitan with coconut oil fatty acid; alternatively, the solid esters sorbitan monopalmitate, monostearate or tristearate may be used. Suitable colour lakes include aluminium, calcium, barium, strontium and iron lakes of organic dyes containing sulpho acid and/or carboxy groups; phosphotungstic, phosphomolybdic, phosphotungstomolybdic, silico-tungstic or silico-tungstomolybdic lakes of basic dyes such as (i) aminopolyarylmethane derivatives, e.g. methyl and crystal violets, (ii) thiazines, e.g. methylene blue, (iii) acridines, (iv) phosphines, (v) xanthenes, e.g. rhodamines, (vi) azodyes, e.g. cheysoidine, (vii) indamines, (viii) thiazoles, (ix) oxazines, aluminium lakes of water-soluble, edible, non-toxic colours containing 15-50% colour based on total weight of lake being preferred. The composition may also include 40-100% (by weight of the lipophilic ester) of an hydrophilic non-ionic surfactant such as polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate.ALSO:Polyethylene is coloured with a composition comprising a colour lake of an organic dyestuff, a lipophilic long chain monocarboxylic fatty acid partial ester of a hexitol anhydride and optionally a hydrophilic non-ionic surfactant. In examples the colouring compositions contain sorbitan monolaurate (lipophilic) polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate (hydrophilic) and differently-coloured aluminium lakes. |
