PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrahigh pressure mercury lamp capable of ensuring a high illuminance maintenance factor for a long stretch of time by suppressing temporal change of a shape of an anode and avoiding fluctuation of a position in which discharge arcs are formed. SOLUTION: An anode and a cathode are placed opposite to each other within a valve, the ultrahigh pressure mercury lamp is filled with mercury of 0.15 mg/mm<SP>3</SP>or more and halogen of 1×10<SP>-6</SP>μmol/mm<SP>3</SP>to 1×10<SP>-2</SP>μmol/mm<SP>3</SP>sealed therein, and a tip of the anode is provided with a protrusion.
