<p>A friction material that exhibits a high friction coefficient, being relatively stable under various braking conditions and enhancing the safety and health at the production of the friction material, and that thus finds wide applications in a variety of uses, such as a brake pad, brake lining, disk pad, crutch facing, paper crutch facing and brake shoe for automobile, large truck, railway rolling stock, aircraft, various industrial machines, etc. The friction material comprises titanium dioxide flakes containing anatase crystals. Preferably, the anatase crystals are contained in an amount of at least 50 wt.%. The titanium dioxide flakes are preferably those synthesized by bonding together sheetlike titanium dioxide pieces of 0.5 to 15 nm thickness, of which the specific surface area is in the range of 2 to 50 m<SUP>2</SUP>/g and the bulk density in the range of 0.05 to 0.5 g/cm<SUP>3</SUP>.</p> |
