The invention relates to a method and device for optically determining the position of an object [1] on a determined zone [2] of a substantially plane surface. According to the invention, at least one directional pointlike emitter [E1] associated with at least two receivers [Rl, R2] of directional pointlike light covering the determined zone [2] are disposed in proximity t o said determined zone [2], each emitter and receiver of light exhibiting an axis substantially parallel to the determined zone and along which a maximum emission, respectively a maximum angular sensitivity, are observed, in such a way that the axes [AR1, AR2] of the receivers [R1, R2] cut the axis [AE1] of the emitter [E1] at different points [P1, P2]. The light emmitter [E1] is turned on and the position of the object [1] on the axis [AE1] of the emitte r [E1] is determined as a function of a comparison of the light signals [S1, S 2] reflected and diffused by the object [1] towards each of the two light receivers [R1, R2].
