An automatic transmission having eight forward speeds and two reverse speeds, where first to third clutches for selectively connecting an input shaft to first and second double planetary gears are arranged in front of the first double planetary gear to thereby make the transmission compact and reduce relative rotation between a sun gear and ring gear of the first double planetary gear. The first to third clutches for respectively enabling the connection of the input shaft to a first element of the first double planetary gear and to the second and fourth elements of the second double planetary gear are arranged in front of the first double planetary gear. Since the first element of the first double planetary gear can be connected to the input shaft via the third clutch, disengaging the third clutch in the first gear prevents reverse rotation of the fourth element of the first double planetary gear to prevent large relative rotation between the fourth element and the first element.
