Provided is a magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer, which includes ferromagnetic powder and a bonding agent, on a nonmagnetic supporting body. A product (Mrd) of a residual magnetization (Mr) of the magnetic layer and the thickness (d) of the magnetic layer is 2mT·µm or more but not more than 12mT·µm, and the magnetic layer has a squareness ratio of 0.4 or more but not more than 0.7 in the vertical direction, and a squareness ratio of 0.3 or more but not more than 0.6 in the longitudinal direction.
