PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift control device for an automatic transmission, capable of precisely prohibiting or permitting continuous shifting by accurately finding the thermal load condition of each friction engaging element. SOLUTION: The shift control device for the automatic transmission comprises the plurality of friction engaging elements. It changes the engaging condition of the plurality of friction engaging elements to perform shift to a target shift stage. When determining the shift, it calculates the current thermal load conditions of the friction engaging elements, predicts the heated conditions of the friction engaging elements to be generated in the next shift, and determines the permission or prohibition of the next shift in accordance with the current thermal load conditions and the predicted heated conditions in the next shift.
