<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which can perform processing for recovering a printing state on the occurrence of poor printing, while suppressing the wasteful consumption of a consumable item by employing an inexpensive constitution. <P>SOLUTION: In this printer 1, print data are inputted, and the printed state of a printed area, in which printing is performed on the basis of the input print data equivalent to one line is detected. Thus, the wasteful consumption of the consumable item such as recording paper P and ink is suppressed in comparison with the case that test printing is performed only for the detection of the printed state. In the detection of the printed state, an optical sensor 50 which is provided at the upstream side in a carrying direction B with respect to a position of printing by a recording head 39 is used for detecting right end and left end positions of the recording paper P.
