A smoke removal apparatus, capable of operating in a confined space without ventilation of the apparatus to the atmosphere to provide removal of smoke from air to be treated. The apparatus comprises one or more of the following filters: a mechanical filter (2) ; an electrostatic filter (3) ; and/or a chemical filter (4) . The apparatus is arranged to collect smoke from a relatively higher position (5) , pass smoke through the one or more filters/ and expel treated air to a relatively lower position (6) .
