In a split-ring synchronizer for dog clutches 5, 7; 6, 7 of a motor-vehicle change-speed gear wherein the expanding action of the split ring 8 is servo-assisted by a wedging member 11, the latter acts on the trailing end 8<SP>1</SP> of the split-ring 8, thereby avoiding premature self-locking produced in prior arrangements which wedge on the leading end. On initial engagement, friction drag in the synchronizing ring 8 by the clutch teeth in the direction of rotation D, Fig. 3, causes the trailing end 8<SP>1</SP> of the ring to tilt the wedge member 11 about a fulcrum formed by a recess 13 in the clutch hub 3<SP>1</SP>, whereby an arm 17 of the wedge member acts radially outwards on the trailing edge 8<SP>1</SP> of the ring 8 to provide the servo assistance. At the same time the trailing edge 8<SP>1</SP> of the ring acts to slide a latch member 12 along an arcuate surface 12<SP>1</SP> in the wedge member 11 so that a surface 21<SP>1</SP> on the latch member supports radially the leading edge 811 of the ring 8. With the ring 8 thus expanded, positive clutch engagement is balked until attainment of synchronism cancels the reaction forces and permits the dog clutch to pass over the ring into positive engagement. To facilitate engagement of the starting gear from standstill, the latch is formed in Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) with one side of its lug set back flush with the lug of the locking member in their normal unengaged central position, thus excluding the action of the latching member for the direction of rotation corresponding to the engagement of the starting gear. Additionally, in Fig. 7 (not shown), the arm of the locking member which moves into engagement with the trailing edge of the synchronizing ring, under these conditions, is made substantially longer, thereby exerting a smaller supporting force on the ring to further facilitate engagement of the starting gear.
