Provided is a system and medical implant for couplng two vertebrae, the implant characterized by a dynamic member (102) having two ends, wherein the dynamic member generally constrains relative movement of the first end with respect to the second end to a three-dimensional curved surface, the first end comprising a means for coupling to a first alignment member (118), the second end comprising a means for coupling to a second alignment member (120) such that the second end can rotate with respect to the longitudinal axis of the second alignment member. The first and second alignment members may be coupled to first and second bone anchoring means (110, 112) at the first and second ends respectively, and the first and second ends may be able to rotate with respect to the longitudinal axes (128, 130) of the first and second alignment members respectively.
