PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bend alignment type liquid crystal display device capable of performing transition of liquid crystal molecules from spray alignment to bend alignment when actuated in a short time with a low voltage by a novel technique different from a conventional one. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 3 is charged between a pair of substrates, alignment processing is carried out for spray alignment of liquid crystal molecules 3a of the liquid crystal layer 3 on internal surfaces of the pair of substrates. On the internal surfaces of the substrates, electrodes 4, 5, and 15 are provided which apply a longitudinal electric field along the thickness of the liquid crystal layer 3 and a lateral electric field parallel to substrate surfaces to transit the liquid crystal molecules 3a from spray alignment to bend alignment when the liquid crystal device is actuated and generates a driving electric field corresponding to image data along the thickness of the liquid crystal layer 3 after the actuation.
