PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position detector for determining the position of a vehicle precisely. SOLUTION: A map matching position calculating section 221 calculates a map matching position based on positioning results by a GPS receiving unit 170 and detection results by a travel sensor unit, while estimating that a vehicle travels on a road in map information 121. A sensor position calculating section 222 calculates a sensor position from the detection results by the travel sensor unit. The sensor position is initialized by a sensor position initializing section 223 when the positioning results or the map matching position can be determined highly precise. Thus, when the precision of the sensor position with initialization properly performed is evaluated to be high by a sensor position precision evaluating section 224 with a certain value or more of difference between the sensor position and the map mapping position, a map matching position correcting section 225 corrects the map mapping position by taking the sensor position as the reference position.
