<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation plate which contributes improvement of display characteristics and is especially suitable as a λ/4 plate, capable of improving tint of color from an oblique direction, and to provide a polarizing plate, a luminance-improving film and a liquid crystal display that uses the retardation plate as the λ/4 plate. <P>SOLUTION: The retardation plate has an optical anisotropic layer in which a liquid crystalline compound is fixed on a support, having retardation Rth in the thickness direction of less than 0 nm, where Nz presented by Relation (1), where an embodiment that the retardation Rth in the thickness direction of the support is -600 to -80 nm, that the retardation Re in the in-plane direction of the support is -10 to 20 nm, that the support is a cellulose derivative and the like are preferable: Relation (1) is Nz=0.5+Rth/Re, where Re denotes the in-plane retardation of the retardation plate and Rth denotes the retardation in the thickness direction.
