<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase difference compensating element which compensates a phase difference generated by TN liquid crystal with high precision. <P>SOLUTION: The phase difference compensating element comprises a discotic liquid crystal layer formed by aligning and fixing discoid liquid crystal molecules 13. A TN liquid crystal layer being applied with a saturation voltage have a vertical alignment region 2a formed at a center part and a hybrid alignment region 2b formed nearby a substrate. Columnar liquid crystal molecules 13 in the vertical alignment region 2a and hybrid alignment region 2b are twisted because of twist alignment in a voltage non-application state. The discotic liquid crystal layer has a twist vertical alignment part 17 compensating a phase difference generated by the vertical alignment region 2a and twist hybrid alignment parts 16 and 18 compensating a phase difference generated by the hybrid alignment region 2b, and compensates a phase differnece generated by the TN liquid crystal with high precision. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
