PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem wherein, when a substance having optical transparency is used as a hygroscopic material on a display region in a top emission type organic EL element, the thickness of the hygroscopic material must be set large for providing sufficient hygroscopic capability, light is largely absorbed by the hygroscopic material, and, when a large quantity of hygroscopic material is arranged only on a non-display region to provide sufficient hygroscopic capability, a peripheral region of a panel is expanded. SOLUTION: Since a hygroscopic layer is formed by using a vapor-phase film formation method, the hygroscopic layer on a display region is formed into a thin-film-like shape, and absorptance of light can be restrained. Since hygroscopic layers are formed in two different places such as a display region and a non-display region, and the hygroscopic layer having a large allowable hygroscopic amount is formed in the non-display region, this organic EL element can include sufficient hygroscopic capability, and increase of the region of a non-display part can be suppressed. As a result, the organic EL element excelling in a display characteristic, capable of maximizing the display region and having a long service life can be provided. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
