PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for starting a reciprocating piston combustion engine to provide an absolute crank angle by successively selecting a start cylinder from the cylinders of the engine until the selected start cylinder succeeds in starting. SOLUTION: When the reciprocating piston combustion engine 2 is not rotated by pressurizing the selected start cylinder with a predetermined amount of start air, another start cylinder is selected, the start is continued, and the piston combustion engine 2 is rotated through a predetermined crank angle. When the engine 2 is rotated in an undesired direction, another cylinder is selected and the start is continued. When a detection means 6 does not indicate a reference mark 5, another cylinder is selected, the start is continued, and the absolute crank angle 7 of a reciprocating piston is calculated using the reference mark 5 indicated by the detection means 6.
