PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a handwritten memorandum reflected in a proper part of new version document data in data replacement, since when copying a printed document including the handwritten memorandum the data replacement is performed if the new version document data are present. SOLUTION: This document management system has a storage means 21, a reading means 11, a detection means 158 and a control means 15. The storage means 21 stores document identification information wherein the document is identifiable associatively with document data. The reading means 11 reads the document, and the detection means 158 detects the document identification information included inside the document. The control means 15 retrieves the document data corresponding to a read image from the storage means 21 by use of the detected document identification information, and composes the document data and a handwriting image extracted from the read image on the basis of updated contents when deciding that the document data are updated from the read image.
