PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light quantity adjustment device that can be operated with low consumption of power and to provide an optical image pickup apparatus having the light quantity adjustment device. SOLUTION: The device has light shield blades 3 and 4 that control incident light, and drives a light shied blade drive lever 2 by means of a drive source attached to a plate 1 having holes 1a through which an incident light passes. The light shield blades 3 and 4 are supported by the light shield blade drive shaft 2b of the light shield blade drive lever 2 so as to be freely pivoted. The plate 1 has pivots 1b and 1c around which the light shield blades 3 and 4 are pivoted against the plate 1. The light shield blades 3 and 4 have square holes 3a and 4a, respectively, which freely fit on the pivots 1b and 1c. The light shield blades 3 and 4 integrally move with the light shield drive lever 2, and has first edges 3ab and 4ab that engage with the pivots 1b and 1c when moved in the direction in which the holes 1a are covered and second edges 3aa and 4aa that engage with the pivots 1b and 1c when moved in the direction in which the holes 1a are uncovered.
