PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for detecting positional deviation of a sleeve for a mandrel when drawing out the sleeve fitted to the mandrel of a coiling/uncoiling machine of a steel plate from the mandrel. SOLUTION: In the method for detecting any positional deviation in the axial direction of a sleeve when hooking the sleeve 14 fitted to a mandrel 16 to a side plate 2 of a horizontally movable and elevating/lowering sleeve placement stand 1 for attaching/detaching the sleeve, and drawing out the sleeve from the mandrel, a sensor 4AB for detecting any positional deviation of the sleeve is provided on the side plate, and a sensor 5 for detecting the position of the mandrel is provided on an elevating/lowering means of the sleeve placement stand. When the sleeve placement stand is elevated, and if the sensor for detecting the positional deviation of the sleeve after the sensor for detecting the position of the mandrel is operated, it is determined that no positional deviation of the sleeve is present; and if the sensor for detecting any positional deviation of the sleeve before the sensor for detecting the position of the mandrel is operated, it is determined that the positional deviation of the sleeve is present.
