ASSEMBLY FOR USE IN A FUEL CELL

An assembly for use in a fuel cell, comprising an ion-conducting membrane, first and second electrocatalyst layers disposed either side of the membrane, first and second gas diffusion substrates contacting the first and second electrocatalyst layers respectively, and a first flow field plate contacting the first gas diffusion substrate, is disclosed. A first encapsulation film, comprising a backing layer and an adhesive layer, is positioned between edge regions of the membrane and the first gas diffusion substrate such that the adhesive layer impregnates through the thickness of the first gas diffusion substrate, and bonds the first flow field plate to the first gas diffusion layer, thereby unitising the assembly.
