PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a foreign material detector capable of detecting the presence of a foreign material highly precisely using a highly precise reference value updated from a reaction value concerning a reaction signal output in response to a foreign material mixed in foods which are detected by a sensor and a reference value associating the types of foods and characteristics thereof. SOLUTION: The foreign material detector, having the sensor outputting the reaction signal in response to a foreign material mixed in an object to be inspected conveyed on a conveyance line and a first decision means for determining the presence of a foreign material compared with the reaction value from the reaction signal and a first reference value K<SB>1</SB>, comprises a second reference value setting means for setting a second reference value K<SB>2</SB>from a product with non-foreign material, a second decision means for determining the presence of the possibility containing a foreign material compared with the reaction value and the second reference value K<SB>2</SB>after setting the second reference value K<SB>2</SB>; and a warning means for warning the possibility when determining that a foreign material may be mixed in the object by the second decision means.
