PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeding apparatus in which an intermediate plate is surely locked and unlocked and defective feeding and damage to parts are prevented from occurring and an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The intermediate plate 2 is locked at a position, to which it is downwardly turned against a pushing force of a spring 3, by a locking mechanism 30 having a locking member 32 configured to lock the intermediate plate 20, and also having a lock releasing member 31 configured to release locking of the intermediate plate by the locking member. When the sheet accommodating unit is mounted, the lock releasing lever is made to abut against a lock release member. When a cassette is stored, it is moved integrally with the locking member in the lock release direction by abutting the lock releasing member 31 on a lock releasing means 40 installed in a device body to release the lock by the lock member 32. When the cassette is drawn, it is so moved alone that the lock is held by the locking member 32 in the reverse direction of the lock releasing direction by abutting the lock releasing member 31 on the lock releasing means 40.
