Disclosed herein are pharmaceutical compositions that include an AA₁RA, or a salt, ester, amide, metabolite, or prodrug thereof, and an anticonvulsant agent. Also disclosed are methods of treating patients suffering from congestive heart failure, methods of improving renal function, and methods of restoring renal function comprising the step of administering a therapeutically effective amount of an AA₁RA or a salt, ester, amide, metabolite, or prodrug thereof, in combination with an anticonvulsant agent.
