A PON(Passive Optical Network) system using a remote pumping optical amplifier is provided to be unnecessary to supply power for an RN(Remote Node) and to enable a transmission distance to be effectively increased. A PON(Passive Optical Network) system using a remote pumping optical amplifier comprises an OLT(Optical Line Terminator,30), a pump LD(Laser Diode)(31), an EDF(Erbium Doped Fiber,33), a WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) coupler(32), an RN(34) and an ONU(Optical Network Unit,35). A pump LD(31) is installed at the OLT(30) for pumping the EDF(33) at a remote place, and the EDF(33) is installed at the RN(34). The light outputted by the pump LD(31) is integrated into a single mode fiber via the WDM coupler(32), and is transmitted to the ONU(35) concurrently with a downlink optical signal. The pumping light which passes through the single mode fiber is absorbed in the EDF(33) and population inversion occurs at the EDF(33). The downlink optical signal is amplified when passing through the EDF(33). The amount of the light outputted by the pump LD(31) is absorbed in the EDF(33) so that the pumping light source is not transmitted to the ONU(35) and only the downlink optical signal amplified by the EDF(33) is distributed by the RN(34) and transmitted to each ONU(35).
